Keep sprinkler heads from soaking the fence line, touch up scratches before bare steel sits exposed, and have the weld joints sealed properly at install, which is where our shop work pays off. Do that and rust stays a maintenance note instead of a replacement bill.

The panel kits at the big-box store make it look like a weekend job. Then the yard slopes, the clay heaves a shallow post, a bracket loosens, and the gate sags by spring. Steel is unforgiving of shortcuts: it needs deep footings, engineered spacing and clean welds. If you want it straight in five years, this is a trade job.
