A properly built Western Red Cedar fence typically lasts 15 to 20 years here; pressure-treated pine usually runs 10 to 15. Post quality decides most of it, which is why ours go deep in concrete and why we quote steel posts on runs that earn them.

Cedar resists rot, insects and warping on its own, and it handles our heat. Pine is cheaper up front and needs more care over a shorter life. Redwood looks great but rarely justifies the cost to ship it here. For almost every DFW yard, cedar is the honest recommendation, and you'll see the material grade at your free on-site assessment.

A board on board fence overlaps pickets on alternating sides, so there are no gaps when boards shrink: full privacy and better wind resistance, using roughly a third more material. Side-by-side sets pickets flush for the classic look at less material. Shadowbox alternates pickets front and back so both neighbors get a finished face, ideal on a shared property line. Want a modern look? Horizontal runs the boards sideways, tight for full privacy or with gaps for a screen. We build all four and tell you which your lot actually needs.

Yes. On a grade we either step the fence down in level sections, which gives clean horizontal lines with small gaps under each panel, or rack the rails so the fence follows the slope with no gaps. Which one fits depends on how steep your yard runs and the look you want. We walk it with you at the assessment and show you both.

It varies by city across North DFW. Some cities require a fence permit, some don't, and height, corner-lot or masonry-column details can trigger one either way. Deep enough to hold: as a rule of thumb about a third of the post's length goes into the ground, deeper on 8-foot runs and wind-exposed lots, all set in concrete on a gravel base that lets water drain instead of pooling at the post. Posts run roughly 6 to 8 feet apart depending on the design, and nothing gets dug before a Texas 811 utility locate marks the lines. Straight, deep posts are the difference between a fence that lasts and one that leans by year three.

Wood gives you the classic look and the lowest up-front cost, and cedar ages beautifully if you stain it. Trex composite costs more to start but never needs staining and shrugs off Texas sun for decades. A short, flat run with no HOA and no utilities is a doable weekend project. Most DFW fences aren't that: they cross clay that heaves, need an 811 locate, have to clear an HOA, and live or die on how the posts are set. That's where a leaning fence comes from. If you want it straight and warrantied, that's our job.

Keep sprinkler heads pointed away from the boards, trim vegetation off the fence line, rinse dirt and mildew off once a year, and fix loose pickets before the wind finds them.
